Welcome to our video series on the manufacturing process of reclaimed wood flooring! We are proud to complete every stage of the process in Berryville, Virginia, and believe that the care we take in manufacturing produces a superior product.
In this series, we will be taking a detailed look at how reclaimed wood is sourced, processed, and transformed into beautiful and durable flooring for homes and businesses. We will explore the different techniques used to bring out the natural character and patina of the wood, as well as the modern technologies used to ensure the stability and longevity of the final product. Whether you’re a homeowner, contractor, or simply interested in sustainable building materials, this series is sure to provide valuable insights into the world of reclaimed wood flooring.
Creating A Uniform Size.
Reclaimed wood arrives at our shop in various shapes and dimensions. Beams, joists, rafters, and other irregularly shaped reclaimed wood are not uniform in size.
Before any wood can be turned into flooring, it must go through the rough-sawing process that helps us stay consistent: rough-sawing into four-quarter lumber which can travel through our machinery at a uniform dimension.
Rough-sawing wood is a technique used to quickly create boards of a specific size, in this case, we saw it into “four-quarter” lumber. Four-quarter lumber is lumber that is sawn roughly into one inch thick boards. Our machinery can make an even cut, which aids us in creating consistently high-quality flooring, and minimizes the possibility of warping and cupping later on.
Prepping for Next Steps.
After the wood is cut into four quarters, we stack it and prepare it for kiln drying. Each stack has smaller sticks placed at intervals between the layers, allowing each piece of wood to receive enough airflow. Beginning the process with the properly prepared material is key to producing a high quality end-product.
