From Logs to Planks – How Wood Flooring Cuts

Not all flooring is cut the same. When planks are cut from logs, there are several ways in which it can be done.

When the log is cut straight through, it is called Live Sawn. This allows for unique grain patterns and high amounts of character (wormholes, knots, etc) to show through. This method also allows for the least amount of material waste, so are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than other cuts.

With Rift Sawn and Quartersawn, the logs are cut at slightly different angles. This cut produces an extremely stable surface, very straight grain lines, and gives the flooring a clean, modern look. Because of the extra labor involved and the added waste, this is a more expensive flooring option than Live Sawn.
